Good design can transform a book. Classy typography, layouts that breathe, and typesetting that is pleasing on the eye. These are just some of the important elements that publishers need to consider.
Remarkably, the principles of good book design remain largely unchanged since printing with moveable type was invented in the mid-fifteenth century. Spacings, margins, proportion and what I call the ‘rhythm’ of page design should adhere to those time-honoured principles if the book is to look its best on your bookshelf.
Typesetting involves the careful, consistent positioning of type elements on the pages of a book. For books in which illustrations are incorporated alongside the text, this involves designing the page spreads for maximum effect and aesthetic balance. Choice of typeface, spacing, and balance, are all vital components.
Modern publishers – and indeed self-publishing authors – have three things to consider: is the print run long enough to justify traditional offset litho printing? can we use the latest high-quality digital printing for a shorter run? And do we want an ebook version, either now or later? Email me if you’d like any more advice or help.
From Word file, or even typescript, Lexis can design and typeset your book to the very highest professional standards.
Currently (2023) we are accepting all types of book-related work, from editing to typesetting, design to printing.
